I just visited an online boutique (who will remain nameless) and I was highly disappointed, which is why I decided to take to my blog to vent. Don't get me wrong, I usually love the owner's personal style and fashion tips, but the plus size size section of her boutique left little to be desired. Straight size stores, stylists, etc. who do NOT take the time out to ask us what we would like to see or what kind of things we like to wear irk me to no end! I've also had some of my friends in the past who are smaller than me pick up some piece-of-crap garment and suggest it to me just because they see it's in my size and my question to these individuals is, "Would YOU wear it?"
My philosophy is: If you wouldn't wear it yourself, don't try to force it on me just because you see it in my size. That to me, is a major slap in the face whether they know they're doing it or not. If you pick up some tacky, ill-fitting garment and suggest I buy it because you see it's in my size, you can expect the 'straight face' and a 'side-eye'. I am 23-years-old and I would like to dress like one. Feel free to buy it for yourself and dress like a 50-year-old, because I'm not wearing that garbage.
I sent a polite message expressing my disappointment with the selection while others inquired about plus size items as well and she said was, "I'm sorry you're disappointed, but we don't 'specialize' in plus size clothing and our selection is very limited."
- What's there to 'specialize' in?
- The selection can be fashionable and limited, not filled with pieces my own grandmother wouldn't wear, but I digress.
I cannot begin to tell you how much I loathe visiting stores or boutiques and the plus size selection is filled with baggy, droopy clothes, horrible designs and structure and made of poor quality. I also have a problem with those who are into straight size fashion who try to jump into plus size fashion without asking for some kind of help or opinion from ladies who are apart of the plus size community if they're not familiar with it. They may think they're doing us a favor by attempting to venture out and be "diverse", but it's still a fail as far as I'm concerned.
NEWSFLASH: Ladies who rock a size 12 and up can be stylish and fashionable too! And no we don't all own bootcut jeans, tunics, and baggy dresses. We like to show off our shapes and be stylish too.
I applaud retailers such as Forever 21
for venturing out and creating Forever 21+ and Curve. I love the pieces I see on both sites and hopefully I can do some shopping soon too.) I can't forget Old Navy and Gap (my second & third home) for always making clothes I can wear and feel comfortable, chic and stylish. I am also excited to see what The Limited
has in store with eloquii,
which is set to launch towards the end of this month! It's good to know they took the time out to work with plus size fashion bloggers and everyday plus size women and curvy girls to find out our likes and dislikes. We need more of that in this community.
I would really like to know what your thoughts are on this topic! Have you ever been in this situation or know someone who has? Let's discuss!
